Much deeper than the standard depth most contractors use. The Wadmalaw soil series is poorly drained with a water table at or near the surface for up to six months a year. Standard post depth is not enough here. We set posts well below the saturated zone with concrete footings and gravel at the base for drainage so the posts stay anchored even when the ground is saturated.
Powder coated aluminum is the most corrosion resistant option for lots close to the salt air coming off the North Edisto River and Bohicket Creek. It will not rust, warp, or rot, and the open picket design sheds wind during storms. Vinyl is the second best choice for residential privacy on larger lots. We recommend based on your specific property and how close you sit to the water.
Two things work against them at the same time. The Wadmalaw soil series holds water at or near the surface for months each year, so posts sit in moisture even during dry spells. Add salt air coming off the North Edisto River and Bohicket Creek, and the combination eats through wood and metal hardware faster than either condition would on its own. Inland lots deal with one or the other. Wadmalaw lots deal with both.
No obligation. We’ll visit your property, walk through the options, and give you honest, free pricing.
